Mt. Kagamiyama (鏡山, Kagamiyama) is a mountain with an elevation of 284 meters, known for its beautifully shaped trapezoidal form, becoming a symbol of Karatsu City.

Overview[]

At the summit, there are attractions such as Kagamiyama Shrine, an observation deck, and a rest area, offering views of Karatsu's cityscape, the scenic “Rainbow Pine Grove” pine grove, Karatsu Bay, and, on clear days, even the silhouette of Iki Island. Along with the breathtaking views, Kagamiyama is also famous as a spot for cherry blossoms and azaleas. In spring, cherry blossoms along the road burst into bloom, creating a “tunnel of cherry blossoms.” The combination of cherry blossoms and the scenic views is truly spectacular.

Moreover, Kagamiyama is adorned with numerous legends, including as the setting for tragic love stories, and is even mentioned in the “Manyoshu,” a collection of Japanese poetry from the 8th century. Visiting with knowledge of these legends and history can add an extra layer of romance.[1]

The summit is also home to Kagamiyama Shrine, a radio tower, and a hang-gliding launch site. Locals can be seen feeding the carp gluten and other treats purchased from the shop at the summit pond. In May, the azaleas are in full bloom, creating a beautiful display. There is a third-order triangulation point, Kagamiyama, at the summit. Its location can be found using the point's markings.

The name Kagamiyama is said to have originated with Empress Jingū, who consecrated a mirror on the mountain's summit to pray for victory in her conquest of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. Upon her return from the expedition, the empress went into labor here, but the pain subsided after drinking spring water offered to her by a villager. She then stopped in Umi, where she gave birth to Emperor Ojin. It is also the legendary spot where Princess Matsuura Sayohime bid farewell to Ōtomo no Satehiko's ship from the mountaintop. Because Princess Sayohime waved the handkerchief she carried in her sleeve, the mountain is also known as Hirefuriyama (Mount Hirefuri).[2]

Synopsis[]
