Former Residence of Genboku Ito (伊東玄朴旧宅, Itō Genboku kyūtaku) was built by Genboku when he was 20 years old in 1821, when he was a Chinese doctor, and was designated as a Saga Prefectural Historic Site in 1973. This residence serves as the place where Hibiya and Yugiri live together and later becomes Yugiri's property.

Description[]

In real life[]

Genboku Ito studied Dutch medicine under Siebold at Narutaki Juku in Nagasaki at the end of the Edo period, was the first in Japan to introduce vaccination to prevent smallpox, and founded the Faculty of Western Medicine, which is now the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tokyo. He is a man who has made great contributions to medicine. He was also the first person in Dutch medicine to become a personal physician to a shogun, and was a person who stood at the top of Dutch medicine, both in name and in reality.

Inside the old house are displayed the Dutch book “Iryoseishi” (The Beginning of Medical Treatment), which Genboku himself translated, medical books from the late Edo period, and photo panels from “Shosendo,” the school of Dutch studies where he taught.[1]

In the anime[]

This building is modeled after Yugiri's house. The residence was reportedly previously purchased by Hibiya in the period before Yugiri's purchase, and served as a residence for both of them before the latter died of “unknown causes.” In the months that followed, Yugiri lived alone in this residence with everything she learned from Hibiya so that she would never lack anything.

The house also served as an important meeting point during the Saga Incident by allowing Kiichi and Ito to enter and have various social gatherings with each other. While Yugiri was alive, she also trained a group of female disciples girls by teaching them various courtesan skills.
